Both reserves offer massive flocks of Caribbean pink flamingos. However, the birds migrate between the two areas to feed and nest. Your base city and your travel month will dictate which coast makes the most sense.
When are flamingos in Rio Lagartos vs Celestun?
Flamingos nest in Rio Lagartos from April to July, making it the peak season. They winter in Celestun from late fall through early spring.
During the spring and summer, up to 40,000 flamingos migrate to the shallow lagoons of Rio Lagartos to breed and raise chicks. This is the prime nesting ground in Mexico. If you visit Rio Lagartos between December and March, you will still see some flamingos, but the largest flocks will be in Celestun.
Which reserve is easier to reach?
Rio Lagartos is a 1.5-hour drive north of Valladolid. Celestun is about 1.5 hours west of Mérida.
If your itinerary centers around Valladolid or the Riviera Maya, Rio Lagartos is the obvious choice. Federal Highway 295 through Tizimín gets you there quickly. For travelers basing themselves in Mérida, Celestun is much closer and easier to access for a half-day trip.

Are the boat tours different?
Both reserves require guided boat tours to view the flamingos. The setup and costs are very similar.
In Rio Lagartos, local cooperative boats hold up to six people and charge between $1,800 and $2,500 MXN per boat. You must also buy a CONANP conservation bracelet for $125 to $140 MXN. Celestun operates on a nearly identical model with local cooperatives.
What else is near Rio Lagartos?
Rio Lagartos pairs perfectly with a visit to the Las Coloradas pink salt lakes.
Just outside the main estuary, you can visit Las Coloradas. This active salt extraction plant features vivid pink waters. Keep in mind that swimming is strictly prohibited there, and you will need to pay a separate land entry fee.

How long do you need in Rio Lagartos?
A standard boat tour takes about two to two and a half hours.
This gives you enough time to see the flamingo feeding flats, navigate the mangrove tunnels, and try a Mayan mud bath. If you drive from Valladolid, plan for a five- to six-hour round trip including time on the water.

Can you see flamingos in Rio Lagartos year-round?
Yes, some flamingos remain in Rio Lagartos all year.
While the huge flocks of up to 40,000 birds are only there from April through July, a smaller resident population stays behind. You can still spot them on boat tours during the off-season, though the numbers will be much smaller.
